Waffle Fun Facts
Waffles date back to the middle ages, where they were cooked on two metal plates over a fire.
Cornelius Swarthout submitted the patent for a waffle iron in 1869.
The worlds largest waffle weighed 110lb 3.68oz and was created by Stichting Gouda Oogst in Nieuwe Markt Gouda on 29th June 2013. It had a diameter of 8ft 1.24 in.
Patrick Bertoletti holds the record for eating 29 waffles in ten minutes in 2007 in the World Waffle Eating Championships.
Waffles were the inspiration for the soles on the first Nike trainers. Bill Bowerman was watching his wife use the waffle iron when he realised the pattern would be the perfect shape for the sole. He actually used a waffle iron to create the first sole.
International Waffle day falls on March 25th.

Belgian Waffle Recipe
2 cups all purpose flour 1-1/2 cups whole milk
3 Teaspoons Baking Powder 1 Cup Melted Butter
2 Large eggs 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Combine flour, sugar, baking powder in a bowl. In another bowl, beat egg yolks. Add milk, butter and vanilla, mix well. Stir into dry ingredients until combined. Beat eggwhites until peaks form and fold into batter.
Bake in a preheated waffle iron until golden brown. Serve with strawberries and syrup, or other toppings to taste.
