Known as ‘Arabian Wine’ the drink dates from the 15th century and is made using seeds from the berries of the coffea plant. The main two varieties used being Robusta and Arabica, with some great flavours coming from Java, Columbia and Kona.
One of the most unusual varieties you can buy is Black Ivory, made from beans that have been eaten by Elephants, passed through their digestive system stripping out some of the enzymes that gives coffee a bitter taste, then excreted out, the producers pick through the dung to sort out whole beans that can be roasted. Unusual and also expensive!
